| UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION SCHOOLS |

|
| INTRODUCTION |
There has been a mushroom growth of schools
in the private sector starting from the last decade of the
previous century. Now, one can find a private school even
in a small village of the remote parts of the country. Most
of the schools in the private sector were opened without a
vision and a long term planning. Very often, the school/college
graduates open their own private schools after completing
the education that they could afford to. As most of the private
school owners did not have the money to establish a good school,
they choose to start the school from a single room not having
the kind of space which is required for the establishment
of a good school. We, therefore, see an increase in small
schools with very limited resources. Many schools fall below
the minimum standard. These private schools are also facing
the problem of finding good teachers because of two reasons:
first, there is a shortage of good quality trained teachers
and second, the schools are not in a position to pay the kind
of salaries that can attract trained teachers. In this scenario,
the schools are forced to get low qualified people to work
in their schools as teachers. These teachers are hired at
a very low salary which generally ranges from Rs 500 to 2000
per month. Getting a trained teacher does not guarantee improved
quality of education in schools. In today¡¯s changing
world, rapid changes in the school curriculum leading to changed
practices in the classroom require continued interaction among
the practicing teachers and teacher education institutions.
Government schools¡¯ teachers are lucky enough to get
training about the latest skills and technology in education.
Government schools are also well-resourced as far as teacher
qualification, training and teaching-learning material are
concerned.

The private schools have very limited opportunities for the
professional development of their teachers and guidance for
improving quality of the education. The facilities which are
available are too expensive for most of the private schools.
There is an acute need for a forum which is accessible to
the private schools at a low cost and where they can have
sustained interaction for the professional development of
their teachers. Core element of school organization is effective
learning, its application in variety of new situations and
to search for creative solutions. This environment is missing
in many schools and requires urgent remediation. The University
of Education focuses on the discipline of education as the
core knowledge area for continually improving and updating
teacher education and teaching methodology. It is committed
to undertake quality research and innovative interventions
in school teaching and classroom culture. The University of
Education having 10 constituent colleges and 34 affiliated
colleges spread all over the Punjab has planned a programme
for facilitating schools in private sector. The idea of attaching
private schools with the University, as a ¡®University
of Education School¡¯, is aimed at providing necessary
guidance and support to the private school to improve the
quality of education. |
