Speaker

Professor Marilyn Leask

Professor Marilyn Leask is leading Education Futures Collaboration charity (MAPPING TECHNOLOGIES EXPERTISE) and co-chair of the international MESHGuides research knowledge mobilisation network, an initiative of the charity.
The Education Futures Collaboration charity exists to mobilise research based knowledge and make it easily accessible by teachers, around the world.. The word ‘MESH’ represents the interconnectedness of the knowledge required for teaching. (MESH = Mapping Educational Specialist knowHow.) MESHGuides have readers in over 200 countries. OECD research shows that no country is managing to keep teachers up-to-date in subject and pedagogic knowledge: the charity uses digital tools allow new solutions to intractable problems.
MESH is an example of a teacher/researcher led, international, knowledge management system for teachers using digital tools to keep costs low:
MESHGuides are research summaries, updated periodically, written for teachers (and parents/carers), linked to the research giving rise to the advice.
MESHConnect describes the collaboration and international networking part of the MESH knowledge management and mobilisation strategy.

Prof. Dr. Riaz Ul Haq

Dr. Riaz ul Haq is a Pakistani American scientist, religious scholar, social thinker and environmentalist. He got his Master of Science in Biology from University of the Punjab Lahore, Pakistan with distinction. He was awarded first position in the University. He taught Biology at Military College of Kharian, Pakistan for 6 months. He left the college to seek alternate higher religious education and moved to Lahore, Pakistan. After completion of Quranic education, he was hired by University of the Punjab, Lahore at Center for Advanced Molecular Biology. There he was the first to be selected by USAID for higher education in Genetic Engineering and Molecular Biology, in USA. He was accepted in a graduate program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, which is the oldest engineering university in the world. He studied and did research work at General Electric Company, Schenectady, New York from January 1986 to March 1988. He worked with Professor Henry Ehrlich of Rensselaer who was a pioneer and the high-ranking authority in geomicrobiology, industrial microbiology and mineral leaching. He returned to Pakistan and joined University of the Punjab, mentoring graduate students at Department of Zoology. He taught, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics and Limnology. He was awarded Ph.D. in Microbiology by joint committee from Worcester, Medical Center, Massachusetts and University of the Punjab, Lahore in 1994 and was selected as Assistant Professor of Genetics and Microbiology at University of the Punjab, Lahore. In July 1999 he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by University of California, Irvine and for that he lived in Long Beach CA. After one year he moved to Baylor College of Medicine, Houston to work on a project investigating breast cancer. At Baylor College of Medicine, he made several very important discoveries investigating interaction of proteins involved in breast cancer. He was awarded the best researcher of the year 2002 by Endocrine Society of USA when he presented his research at annual meeting of the Society held in San Diego, California. He worked at University of Texas Health Science Center on projects like effect of nicotine on cell biology of human cells and on molecular biology of newly marketed anti diabetic drugs on human cells. He also worked and taught at University of Texas at San Antonio from 2007 to 2011. Currently he is a working at South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and Qualtex Laboratories. Qualtex laboratory is the largest lab in the world for blood and blood product testing. Research in Environmental Clean-up Strategies Dr. Haq was the pioneer in Microbial Environmental clean-up studies while at University of the Punjab. He managed to publish several related scientific research papers in peer reviewed journal in Europe and USA. He isolated and identified many microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast protozoa and algae, efficient in detoxification of toxic metals. Industrial wastes from tanneries and other industries are not properly treated before being released into environment and natural waters because of high cost of chemical detoxification operations particularly unaffordable for third world countries and for developing countries. Microbial treatment of industrial toxic wastes is cost-effective and natural. Tanneries use chromium VI for treatment of hides. It ends up in natural waters and is highly toxic and carcinogenic. Dr. Haq isolated microorganisms surviving in contaminated waters and studied their metal detoxification ability. Some of the microorganisms were found to be extremely resistant to heavy metal toxic ions and were also capable of detoxification of metal ions. They convert chromium IV to chromium III that is extremely less toxic as compared to CrVI. Dr. Haq proposed an efficient procedure for detoxification of heavy toxic metal ions involving sequential use of bacteria, yeast and algae. His model has been listed in World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, published in Europe. Scientific Publications Dr. Haq has followed objective oriented research. He has published about 40 research papers in various scientific journals. More than 10 of his papers are listed at ENTREZ PUBMED of United States’ National Institute of health (NIH). NIH is the Governmental organization dedicated for health-related strategies, research and funding. He has also published books for public and student awareness in contemporary science. His book “Everyday Science” has been ranked one of the best introductions to science for students who have not studied science as a major and for ordinary people. His book “Planets” was written after inspiration from NSA's Voyager I and Voyager 2 missions. These two missions were the most successful in exploring the solar system and collected a huge wealth of scientific information about the planets of the solar system. “Planets” is a very good introduction to these planets.
