Dr. Zaheer Abbas joined University of Education (UE) Lahore Campus DG Khan as Assistant Professor of Botany (TTS) in March 2021. Previously, he served as IPFP Fellow in the same institution. He received his Ph.D. from Hazara University Mansehra, and M.Phil. from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. Dr. Abbas has BSc (Hons.) and M.Sc. from University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan. Before joining UE he has worked as a Consultant Botanist and Medicinal Plant expert in an Italian-based non-governmental organization EvK2CNR devoted to the biodiversity and conservation of high altitude national parks of Gilgit-Baltistan i.e. "Deosai National Park (DNP)" and "Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP)". He has also served as Plant Taxonomist in International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry University of Karachi. He is a member of different academic societies like International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS) and Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG).
He has immense field experience of plant collection, identification and vegetation surveys of different ecological and climatic zones of Pakistan like coastal areas, hot deserts, cold deserts, sub-tropical mountains, dry temperate mountains, sub-alpine areas, and alpine belts. His research is focused on plant biodiversity, vegetation ecology, ethnobiology, phytogeography, ecosystem services sustainability and phytochemistry. Generally, he conducts research in the mountain ranges of the Himalaya, the Karakoram and the Sulaiman.
He has completed a project under HEC Start Up Research Grant Program (SRGP) as Principal Investigator. He has published 43 research articles with more than 1000 citations, h-index 16 and i10-index 20. He also authored a book and 02 book chapters.
He is reviewer of 31 scientific national and international academic journals published by reputed publihers (Elesevier, Springer, Talyor and Frncis, MDPI, Wiley) like Journal of Arid Environmnet, South African Journal of Botnay, Journal of Mountain Science, Biodiversity and Conservation, Forets, Life, Cogent Food and Agriculture, All life, Water, Emvironmental Science, etc.
He has supervised 18 BS, o3 MS, and co-supervised 11 MS students. Currently, he is advisor of 07 MS students. He teaches at graduate and post-graduate courses related to plant eclology, plant systematics, biodversity conservation, research methodology and ethnobotany.
